Facebook (FB), Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL): In The Top Three For Scott Pruitt
WASHINGTON, D.C. - It only took a day for embattled former EPA head Scott Pruitt to receive plenty of job offers. It would make sense that he would return to the energy sector, his area of experience, but big-time players in tech have jumped to the front of the line.
FB, AMZN, AAPL: Which Hat Will Pruitt Wear?
White hat and black hat are computer hacking-related terms defining the nature of a hacker's actions. White-hat hackers tend to be idealistic and altruistic. They attempt to battle perceived injustices in the world with their hacking acumen. Black hat hackers are pretty much the opposite. These are the guys stealing passwords, credit card numbers and causing computer-related crises all over the world, usually for financial gain.
In the past, governments have excused computerized transgressions in exchange for help stopping computerized transgressions. This practice goes back to the Leonardo DiCaprio vehicle Catch Me If You Can involving check fraud.
"There are no industries immune from poor ethical decisions," said Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook. "I've had to go in front of Congress and explain some of the decisions we've made. It's not our fault that people believe anything, but having someone like Scott Pruitt aboard will help us weed out ethically-challenged employees and keep us on the right track. Sometimes to understand the bottom of the barrel you have to get to know the bottom of the barrel."
Amazon's CEO Jeff Bezos was enthusiastic about poaching Pruitt from oil and gas interests, but wasn't pleased with the bidding process. "Mr. Pruitt specified that the bids would have to be presented confidentially, and that he would weigh the pros and cons of each company pursuing his services. I'm used to just buying whatever the heck I want without having to compete. On the bright side, it is possible that the insight from such an unethical individual as Pruitt can help us tackle the problem of vendors selling illegal knockoffs on our platform."
